"Nanchangs 02 and 04 in formation near Goolwa SA where they are used by Whaleair proprietor Mr Nigel Dunn for adventure flights. Since these pictures were taken Nigel has added a further CJ-6, 03, to his fleet for a total of three" (www.whaleair.com.au)

CERTIFICATION

The majority of ex-military aircraft do not have a standard CofA as they are not normally tested to civilian standards. We have the aircraft certified in the LIMITED category, which enables us to be issued with a Limited CofA. Such a CofA does not allow all the uses of a standard CofA, but the restrictions are not onerous.

MAINTENANCE

There are no special requirements for maintenance of the Nanchang other than an inspection every 100 hours of operations or 12 months. The aircraft is relatively simple to maintain and can be done by any LAME that is familiar with radial engined aircraft

LICENCE REQUIREMENTS

The Nanchang has no special licence requirements other than a normal PPL licence with a constant speed and retractable undercarriage endorsement. It is a delight to fly, being both agile and forgiving. The trailing link undercarriage soaks up a lot of punishment if called upon to do so. The Nanchang is fully aerobatic and cleared to carry out all of the maneuvers listed in the PLAAF Pilot Handling Notes The excellent power to weight ratio allows aerobatics to be carried out without a loss of height in the hands of a competent pilot.

Of interest is that the Nanchang CJ-6 is used by the PLAAF as a basic ab-initio and advanced trainer as they have no intermediate trainer. The Chinese pilot graduating from the CJ-6 course next steps into the JJ-5, or MiG15 equivalent. Such is the versatility of the CJ-6 in the training role.
